When we recorded Episode 007 of HVAC R&D, we wanted to take a step back and laugh at ourselves a little — and maybe remind everyone that team-building isn’t something that only happens on a corporate retreat.
The trades are a team sport, whether you realize it or not.
Every project, every install, every late-night service call is a ropes course all its own.
“Nobody gets through this trade alone — not for long, anyway.”
If you’re lucky, you find yourself working shoulder-to-shoulder with people who’ll teach you, push you, and sometimes carry you when you’re hanging on by a thread.
It’s not just about technical skill — it’s about trust.
“Trust on a ropes course is optional. Trust on a rooftop is survival.”
When you’re hanging ductwork, sweating through a PM, or troubleshooting a rooftop unit with a thunderstorm rolling in, you find out real quick whether you can count on your team.
“You can’t fake hustle when the system’s down and the clock’s ticking.”
Real teamwork isn’t about how good you look in the company T-shirt — it’s about whether you show up when it matters.
It’s about grit, not glamour.

Out there in the elements, nobody cares about your title or your resume.
They care about whether you’ll pull your weight, keep your word, and have their back when things get rough.

We’ve all been the “fat guy on a ropes course” at some point — struggling, doubting, wondering if we’re cut out for it.
But if you’re willing to show up and keep climbing, you’re already ahead of most.
